Frequently Asked Questions
Radon is an invisible, tasteless and odorless gas in the soil. It can be found in any style, age and size of home, with any type of foundation.
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the US after smoking.
Cost will vary depending on the difficulty and time involved in the project. A newer home with an existing “passive” radon system will be significantly faster and simpler to mitigate aka “activate” than an older home with no pipe already in place to use for the mitigation system.
Additional variables that impact the difficulty of the project include:
- Foundation type (stone, block, concrete/slab, basement/crawlspace)
- Homes with more than one foundation type (basement + crawlspace, etc)
- Soil type (it’s more difficult to suck gas out of clay than it is to suck gas out of gravel)
Drive time can become a factor if the home is more than a 45min drive from Tiffin.
Yes, all systems come with our standard 5 year warranty. The warranty remains with the system, not the individual that chooses to install it. Customers have the choice to extend this guarantee to 10 years at an additional cost.
Generally, installations take less than a day. Homeowners do not need to be present during the installation, however, they are more than welcome to be there and our team will answer any questions.
Some of our staff are also state-certified radon measurement specialists employed by Vigilant Home Inspections in addition to their mitigation work with Adios. If the initial test was performed by Vigilant, we (as Vigilant) may be able to set the 48hr post-mitigation test (on a 24 hr delay) when we finish the install.
If for any reason you’d prefer to have this post mitigation testing done by a different company (to avoid any potential appearance of a conflict of interest), we can arrange that at your request.
Adios also works with numerous state-certified third party testers. If you were referred to us by another company who performed the initial measurement, we will hire them to perform the post mitigation test, in the interest of consistency. If said 3rd party would prefer not to return for a post-mitigation test (due to drive time or for any other reason), we can still get the post mitigation test done through Vigilant.
You can also purchase a testing system through Amazon ~here~. Radon tests are also available from some county public health offices. This option is not advisable if the mitigation and/or post mitigation test are part of a real estate transaction (anywhere) or is required for a rental permit (Iowa City).
Estimates are free of charge within 45 miles of Tiffin, IA.
Yes, we accept credit and debit cards, and no, we do not add any convenience fees.
An experienced individual (i.e. plumber) can cut the radon pipe to replace the sump and reconnect the radon pipe into the sump lid which will require resealing with 100% silicone.
It is likely due to a crack in the silicone that seals the base of the system. You can reseal this with 100% silicone or call us. If you choose to reseal it as the homeowner, your warranty will NOT be voided.
First, check for tripped breakers in your electric panel. If that is not the culprit, call/email Adios Radon for instruction.
It is not uncommon to hear a gurgling sound after a heavy rain or large thaw. If the sound continues for more than a week, please call/email Adios Radon and we will schedule an appointment for service.
