Radon Mitigation in Pella Explained

Radon mitigation is the process of lowering radon gas concentrations within homes, primarily through sub-slab depressurization (SSD). This method works by creating negative pressure under the foundation to inhibit radon entry. The system generally includes a suction pit for radon accumulation, piping, and a fan to expel the gas outside.

How does mitigation work?

Expert Radon Mitigation Installation Techniques

Mitigation can be divided into three parts:

Suction Pit

A suction pit is created by removing about three five-gallon buckets of soil from beneath the slab, providing an access point for the system to draw out radon gas.

PVC Piping

A PVC pipe is inserted into the suction pit and extends upwards, connecting to the exterior of the home, often through the attic or an exterior wall.

Radon Fan

A specially designed radon fan is connected to the vent pipe, typically in the attic, garage, or outside the house. The fan continuously pulls radon gas from beneath the foundation and vents it outside.

Frequently Asked Questions about Radon Mitigation

Here are answers to the most common questions we receive in Pella. If you need more information, feel free to reach out!

Yes, radon is present in outdoor air, but at very low concentrations that pose virtually no health risk. The average outdoor radon level is about 0.4 pCi/L, which is well below any level of concern. The danger arises when radon becomes trapped and concentrated inside enclosed spaces like homes, offices, and schools. This is why ventilation alone, while helpful, is not considered a permanent or fully reliable solution for homes with structurally driven radon entry.

Painting or sealing foundation cracks with standard paint or even radon-specific sealants can help reduce radon entry to some degree, but it is not sufficient as a standalone mitigation strategy. Radon can enter through cracks too small to see, through porous concrete itself, and through pipe penetrations that paint cannot adequately seal. Sealants are useful as a complementary measure when used alongside a properly installed sub-slab depressurization system. Relying on sealants alone without an active fan system is unlikely to bring radon levels down to safe concentrations in most Iowa homes.

A dehumidifier addresses moisture levels in a home but has no meaningful impact on radon concentrations. While reducing moisture can help improve overall basement air quality and prevent mold, it does nothing to address the pressure differential that draws radon gas from the soil into the home. These are two separate issues that require separate solutions. If your basement has both moisture and radon concerns, Adios Radon can help you prioritize the radon mitigation component while you address humidity through appropriate dehumidification.

Radon can enter homes through municipal water supplies as well as private wells, though the risk is generally higher with well water drawn from granite or other uranium-rich rock formations. When water containing dissolved radon is used for showering, washing, or cooking, the gas is released into the indoor air and contributes to overall radon levels. Waterborne radon can be addressed through treatment systems such as aeration devices or granular activated carbon filters installed on the water supply. If both your home and your well water test elevated, addressing both sources provides the most comprehensive protection.

Opening windows can temporarily dilute radon concentrations by introducing fresh outdoor air, but it is not a reliable or sustainable long-term solution. When windows are closed – as they are for the majority of the year in Iowa – radon levels will return to their previous elevated state. Ventilation strategies are also highly dependent on weather, wind direction, and occupant behavior, making them inconsistent at best. A properly installed and continuously operating mitigation system is the only proven method for maintaining consistently safe radon levels throughout the year.

Absolutely. One of our most memorable projects involved a historic brick home in Iowa that had originally been built as a church. The unique construction, thick masonry walls, and unconventional foundation presented challenges that required creative problem-solving and experienced hands. Our team of certified technicians rose to the challenge, designing a system that worked within the building’s unique architecture while still achieving safe radon levels. Projects like these are a reminder that experience and adaptability matter just as much as technical certification in this industry.
